The Fireweed Story

From side hustle to full-time occupation

Kris Farmen started Fireweed Editorial in 2015.

Originally it was a side hustle editing and formatting PhD dissertations for graduate students who were so burnt-out from writing and school they couldn’t see straight. Over the years it evolved into a technical editing service for the engineering and environmental science industry, with a few trade book projects here and there.

In 2020 we started offering content marketing writing as part of our suite of services. Initially we specialized in work for engineers and environmental professionals, but since then we’ve branched out to produce content in niches as diverse as adventure tourism, cold-water surfing, and the history of bulk fuel delivery.

The Editorial We

Kris Farmen is a writer, editor, and recovering journalist. He holds degrees in anthropology and archaeology, and made his living as a field archaeologist for 12 years for both government agencies and private consulting groups. Eventually he migrated away from the sciences to work as an independent journalist; his beat was the intersection of economics, history, and the environment. During this time he also wrote and published four books. Fireweed Editorial came about as a coalescence of his writing and publishing chops with his years working in the science consulting world.

Kris has borderline unhealthy obsessions with history, surfing, berry-picking, renewable energy, the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca, and letterpress printing. He’s married to a creative writing teacher and has an adorable four-year-old daughter. His dog, surprisingly enough, speaks a little Italian.
